The main theme of V.I. Shiljaev’s works is marine nature and ships. He presented it through the history of the Far Eastern fleet (naval, trade, fishing) of old and present epochs. One can find five main directions in it: research and developing of the Far East by Russian naval seamen, marine views with ships, the names of which were given to the bays of Vladivostok as well as islands of the Bay of Peter the Great, the Russian-Japanese war of 1904-05, the Tsusima battle, southern Primorye lighthouses, landscape of the settlement of Preobrazhenie.

Both in paintings and drawings V.I. Shiljaev is working in the style close to the latest academic romantism characteristic to the Russian paintings of the 19th c., keeping to traditions of marine and battle painting, founded by I.K.
